Let's go parents it's your time

Stephanie from North Dakota writes:

Dear Jason,
I'm an at home mom and it's been a week since my kids went back to school. I swore I would start working out when they went back but I can't seem to get motivated to do anything. Please help!

Answer:

Dear Stephanie,
It is definitely tough to get motivated after summer break. Much like most people with school age kids, their summer vacation is as much for adults, it’s a parent’s break from getting up at the crack of dawn to make breakfast and get lunches around. The lazy days of summer are about getting a few extra hours of sleep, but once you’re up its run, run and run our kids around.

One day falls into the next and then all of a sudden you see commercials on TV announcing back to school shopping and you’re not so gently reminded about all the fun things that come with back to school. And in the blink of an eye-BAM! It's time to wake up at the crack of dawn again and it's a new school year. That first morning you are wondering what the license plate was of the Mack truck was that just hit you; you are dragging trying to get your bearings and wondering how inappropriate it would be to go back to bed when the door shuts behind them…

It's okay Stephanie, if this is you we can fix it. Let’s start with asking about the amount of sleep you are getting. Being an at home mom is one of the hardest jobs known to man. There is no overtime pay for the 12-14 hours a day that you put in, and you don't have a specific job description because you wear ten different hats at any given time.

Step 1- More sleep: You might be thinking this difficult but you can do it. Make yourself a bedtime just like you do for the kids. The recommended amount of sleep per night is 6-8 hours, some people need more and others less, only you know what you need. it seems as if you aren't a morning person, let's change that. When your alarm goes off, keep your eyes closed and don’t grumble but first tell yourself what a great day it is going to be because you are alive and that alone is fantastic. The day in that lies ahead of you is yours so think of all the positives each morning, even through all the hustle, bustle and chaos of kids getting around.

Step 2 My Time:  You need to set time aside for yourself. It's time to look in that mirror and tell yourself how fantastic you are and grab those workout clothes. Schedule yourself your workout time and make sure it’s in your phone, on the refrigerator calendar, or wherever you need to make sure you keep the commitment to yourself. If it's written down, you won't schedule over it. Now we understand that there will be things that trumps workout time, but don’t totally cancel it thinking you will get to it, rearrange your schedule to make it happen. A professional would reschedule their appointments or meetings, and since you are the CEO of your family, you can reschedule your workout time.

Step3 Eat Healthy: Prioritize your time and schedule your meals in advance. Eat a balanced diet that fuels you, not drags you down because it’s nutritionally    inadequate or just crappy; drink your water-all of the things you already know. Just like your workout time, scheduling what and when you eat is important because if you have a plan you can follow, it and will typically not disrupt or foul up your day. If you are standing in front of the refrigerator trying to figure out what you are going to eat, you will generally grab the fastest and easiest thing to make, and that isn't always the best for you or your family’s health. If you eat healthy, you feel healthy and more energetic. Your family will appreciate your habits.

Step4 Live and Love Life: These are just some basic things to try to build a healthier foundation under you, give it some time and see how these changes will positively work for you. You will start to feel better about yourself taking better care of yourself and everyone around you will see it, too.
